Giants Sign Whiteside

December 17, 2011

Eli Whiteside has been re-signed to a Major League contract according to John Shea.

The Breakdown: Too. Much. Grit.

Update: Whiteside is to make “$600,000 if he is on the major league roster and $175,000 if in the minors.”

Bo’s Take:

I thought Chris Stewart had won the backup catcher job but I think this signing affirms that such an idea is not necessarily true. Whiteside did have surgery on his throwing arm last offseason and that could have been the root for his inability to throw out base runners. I think Whiteside’s true talent is better than what we saw last year. I especially hope that’s true if he wins/is given the backup job next year.
