Sabean, Bochy extended through 2013 + 2014 club option

Two more possible years of Sabean & Bochy, LLC. First impression: meh.

From the moment Larry Baer was announced as the team’s top decision maker in October, he made it clear that GM Brian Sabean and Manager Bruce Bochy would remain his baseball architects for the long term.

The rubber stamp arrived today, when the Giants announced contract extensions for Bochy and Sabean. The club added another guaranteed year to their deals, which were set to expire after the 2012 season; there’s also club options on both men for the 2014 season.

Bo’s Take:

I think everyone in the world was expecting this to happen. Though I think Baer was very smart to only extend them for another year. It is general practice for managers and GM’s to always have at least one extra year left on their contracts. The idea behind it is that players will generally listen to a person who they know will be in a position of power in the organization for a while. I think Baer could have done much worse by extending them for 2 to 3 more years. I no superfan of Brian Sabean and I am no devotee to the cult of Bochy but I am relieved to know that the Giants don’t see them as their GM and managers of the next half decade… yet.
